I still reviewed all my lesson and tried to study by myself even if there was no English class for me. I tried to learn by heart, reading and writing again and again. The more I did it, the more I remembered it. Not only that I still looked for someone to teach me more and more.
One day, fortunately, I sat in front of the temple inside the hut. There was one guy sitting near me. I had a chance to talk with him. He might be 50. First I asked him what his name was, where he was from, and where he lived. He told me that his name was Mr Phouma. He just moved from Vientiane. He lived in front of the temple.
When I heard he moved from Vientiane, I thought he might be able to speak English. I immediately asked him if he could speak English and teach me . He said he could but he did not have teaching material. I told him to not worry about that I had some of teaching materials. I would lend him.
Next day, I brought him all my English book or materials which I collected since I studied English at first time. That included English dictionary. He looked at them and said that he would teach and use it. After he agreed, I came back to prepare a class and all materials. The class would take place in the temple at night. Not only that, I also announced to everyone in my village who were interested in studying English.
There were a lots of boys and girls came and asked more information and they were very interested in English. At night, there were lots of boys and girls joined the class including me. First day and the day afther, we started learning from the basic lesson such as alphabet, vowels, vocabulary, and basic grammar as well as conversation. It seemed everyone enjoy the class at the first month.
The second month, we studied more grammar such as noun, verb, adjective for instance. The more everyone learned it, the more they confused it. It seemed they looked not interested it. To me, I had learned some of them. It was not difficult for me. Finally, the class automatically stopped because no students came to the class. There was only me alone.

Love To Learn More
Even though, there was no more English class and everyone stopped learning but I still wanted to study. I still reviewed my English lesson and tried to learn it by myself and asked my uncle whichever I did not know it.
In addition, I analyzed my weakness and looked for the way to solve it. One of my weaknesses was I did not remember all four types of alphabet. That’s why I could not read whenever I saw the big capital letter or other types of letter. Therefore, I went to talk with my father and asked him to write it for me.
Basically, my father could speak French and English a little bit. He encouraged me on that therefore he did not hesitate to write it for me. He agreed and wrote all four types of alphabet on a paper with Lao spelling or Lao translation in order to be easy for reading it.
I fold that paper and put it in my pocket. I brought it with me all the time. Whenever I had time, I would take it out and learned it. At that time, my first goal was just I was able to read all four types of alphabet. That’s enough for me and I would be very happy. Therefore, every time I walked past things like a box , a sign which there were English word on it. I would stop and tried to read it.
One day I went to take a bath in the Mekhong river. I saw a merchandise boat stopped at the village Harbor. There were lots of goods on the boat. Workers were carrying down from the boat and put on the ground. I glanced at them and saw a tank with English word. It was attractive to me.
I stopped in front of that big tank and read each letter slowly and slowly letter by letter to test myself. G-A-S-S…. I didn’t even care about its word or sentence or meaning. Unfortunately, the rest of other words or letters were hided on the ground. I could not read it. So then I pushed that tank up.
Immediately, there was a laborer seeing that. He taught that I would steal things. He came to me and shout at me loudly.. thief…thief… there were lots of people around there looking at me. I said No and tried to explain to him what I was doing but it seemed he did not believe me.
Fortunately, my friend passed by there and saw the event. They assisted me to communicate with that guy till he accepted. After that I went to take a bath with my friends and back to the temple.

My First Start To Learn English
Interest and Desire are the root of energy in doing very thing including learning English which those are one of successful factors as Buddha said. Those are Santha (Interest , satisfy and Desire), Viriya (effort, attempt), Chitta(concentration, focus, attention) and Vimangsa (find the best way)”.
So I get to know English and tried to learn Englsih since I was a novice in 1980. Studying English at that time was not easy. Because 1) there was no teacher, 2) it was considered as a politic issue and 3) there was no foreigner to speak with or practice with. However, “Wat Sri Don Khoun”, Namkeungmai village, Tonpheuang district and Bokeo province where I was a novice had English teaching secretly.
First, I did not know there was teaching English in the temple. So one day, I went to the toilet at night and I passed “Araam” (the big hall that there is a big Buddha and place to do Buddhist ceremony). I heard voices of people came out from the hall. After I finished my pi, I went to that hall, climbed up the wall of the hall and oversaw it. What I saw was a man standing in front of 6-7 monks and he was teaching them something which I had no idea what it was. I only heard what they repeated “ I do not….I do not….I do not…”
I suddenly saw it, I felt very, very funny. I could not control myself. I immediately laughed at that and fallen down to the ground and I started climbing again and watching it. The more I watched it, the more I had a feeling that it was very funny and interesting. After watching it for a while, I came back to sleep.
In the morning, I asked my ancle who were in that group of students. He told me that was English course. They were learning English. Without hesitation, I asked him if I could join that class. He said that why not, but I had to ask my parents first. I went to ask my mother. She allowed me to join that English class.
I started learning English by paying 20 baht for the tuition fee and 10 baht for fuel (because no electricity). I could not catch up all because I had to learn double- reviewing previous lessons and also every day lesson. It was quite difficult for me to remember all. What I learned was verb to be, have, can, do, etc.
Unfortunately, after I joined the class for one month, the class was closed because the authority found that there was English teaching and finally it was recommended to stop therefore the class was closed. That means my English learning was stopped.
